How to register a .dll or .ocx file in Windows
Procedure Steps
There are times when a technical support technician will request that you register a .dll for the purposes of troubleshooting. Here are a couple example of how you can go about doing this.
1. Open the command prompt as an administrator
2.The first step is to change the directory to where the registry server will be run from
For 32 bit systems that directory is c:\Windows\sytem32, for 64 bit system running OnGuard (which is a 32 bit software) the path will be c:\Windows\SysWow64
3.Once the directory is changed, you can then register the file by typing in the name of the application that will register the file (it is regsvr32.exe) followed by a space and the exact name of the dll
The below screen shot is an example of registering the “UTCH264decDMO.dll” on a 64 bit system running OnGuard.
Here is an alternative method of registering a dll
1.Open a Windows Explorer window and browse to the location of the file you are trying to register.
2.Right click on the file and select “open with”
3.Choose the “select a program from a list of installed programs *note if this doesn’t show, that’s ok, windows may default to the next window in step 4
4.In the ‘choose the program you want to use to open this file’ box, select the ‘browse’ button towards the bottom of the window
5.Browse to the registering application (For 32 bit systems that directory is c:\Windows\sytem32\regsvr32.exe, for 64 bit system running OnGuard (which is a 32 bit software) the path will be c:\Windows\SysWow64\regsvr32.exe
6.Select open- the file should then register
A few things to remember for this process
-To avoid registration errors, it is best to be an administrator on the machine you are working on
-Not all .dll files will need to be registered
-If you are an administrator and you keep getting errors attempting to register a file that you know needs to be registered, it could be the result of a bad install- make sure you are following the rules of installing the software
