Error installing SQL Server Management Studio 2008 on Windows 7: ''This program has known compatibility issues''

Symptom

When launching the installer for SQL Server Management Studio 2008 from the OnGuard Supplemental Materials disc on a computer running Windows 7 you may encounter the following error message:

"This program has known compatibility issues

Check online to see if solutions are available from the Microsoft website. If solutions are found, Windows will automatically display a website that lists steps you can take.

Program: Microsoft SQL Server 2008
Publisher: Microsoft
Location: D:\Prerequisite Software\Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express\SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU.exe

After SQL Server Setup completes, you must apply SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or a later service pack before you run SQL Server 2008 on this version of Windows."

Resolution

Click [Run Program] to continue installing SQL Server Management Studio 2008. The installer will continue to run.

Additional Information

Note that if the [Check for solutions online] button is clicked you will be redirected to the Microsoft Web site where several SQL Server 2008 Express options will be available to download. However, none of these options contain the SQL Server Management Studio application.
